- What is the difference between an importer, agent and distributor?
Commission or indent agents sell on behalf of exporters and receive a commission on sales made.
Agents seek out potential customers and may be used to facilitate and promote your products in their respective markets. Agents may be paid a salary, a retainer, a commission or a combination of all three but unlike importers/distributors, they do not take legal possession of any goods.
Importers solely import goods for resale to other companies in the distribution chain and take legal possession of goods.
Importers/distributors take legal possession of goods and pay exporters. They are usually obliged under the terms of their agreement with exporters to carry stocks and to provide
after sales service where necessary.
For a comprehensive export guide, you can purchase The Export Handbook.
The handbook takes you through the practical aspects of exporting essential for both experienced and novice exporters. It covers Export Procedures and Documentation, Customs Export Regulations, Internet Commerce, Banking and Finance, Export Risk and Credit Insurance, Marine Insurance, Shipping and Air Cargo, Freight Forwarding, Export Packaging and Resources for International Trade.
